Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

If you experience pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness in your hand, you may be suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome has become a common affliction in our society because of improper hand positioning while typing on keyboards or using a computer mouse. Gregg A. Vagner, MD, can thoroughly examine your hand and wrist to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome, and he can treat the concern non-invasively or with surgery.

Wrist Fractures

Wrist Fractures

You may have fractured your wrist if you are experiencing discomfort when using the joint or you notice a change in your wrist's appearance. Wrist fractures should be treated by an orthopedic surgeon as soon as possible after they occur, or else the bones may heal improperly and cause longer-lasting and more expensive problems. Unlike other physicians who may address cases involving the spine, ankle, or knee, Dr. Vagner is a wrist specialist who can apply his advanced knowledge to your fracture.

Thumb Arthritis

Thumb Arthritis

Thumb arthritis occurs when the cartilage in and around your thumb joint degrades, causing painful friction between the bones. If you suspect you are suffering from thumb arthritis, Dr. Vagner can conduct a thorough exam at his offices in Austin and Cedar Park, TX. If he determines that arthritis is the cause of your thumb pain, he can address the condition non-invasively with cortisone injections or through surgical methods like osteotomy, joint replacement, or tissue grafting.

Why See an Orthopedic Surgeon?

Orthopedic specialists like Gregg A. Vagner, MD, receive advanced education in the musculoskeletal system after standard medical school. Orthopedic physicians usually specialize in one part of the body, such as the knee, ankle, or spine. Dr. Vagner specializes in the elbow, wrist, and hand.

If you are experiencing pain in any of the joints in your arm, it is best to seek the expert advice of an experienced, highly trained orthopedic physician like Dr. Vagner. At his offices in Austin and Cedar Park, TX, Dr. Vagner can evaluate your joint pain and diagnose the condition with greater accuracy than a general physician. Should orthopedic surgery, such as joint replacement, be necessary, only an orthopedic surgeon is qualified to perform the procedure.

What About Joint Replacement?

While Dr. Vagner always starts with the most conservative steps first, he is highly qualified to perform joint replacement when there is a need.

With joint replacement, part or all of a damaged joint is replaced with an artificial one so that you can move your limb without pain or limitations.

As a double board-certified orthopedic surgeon, he has the advanced training to successfully replace joints in your hand or elbow and restore your ability to move freely.

If joint replacement is necessary, he will replace your failing joint with an artificial one that is safe and durable, choosing a design and materials that offer smooth, natural movement of the joint.

Surgery is a Last Resort

Orthopedic surgery can achieve life-changing results, but non-invasive treatments can sometimes be equally effective. Because of his commitment to conservative care, Dr. Vagner's first instinct is always to consider non-invasive methods before surgical methods. Some of the non-invasive techniques Dr. Vagner utilizes include:

Cortisone Injections

Cortisone is an anti-inflammatory medication that relieves pain. Orthopedic surgeons often inject cortisone into joints such as the knee, spine, or elbow. In Dr. Vagner's case, he utilizes cortisone to relieve pain around the elbow, wrist, and hand. Cortisone injections have the potential to relieve pain for several months.

Physical Therapy

In many cases, Dr. Vagner will recommend forms of physical therapy to relieve joint pain. These physical therapy exercises include simple stretching routines and revised, healthier approaches to lifting or gripping items.

Ice Packs or Heating Pads

Ice packs or heating pads can reduce inflammation and mitigate pain. Dr. Vagner provides his patients with proper icing and heating regimens for optimal results.

Medication

Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication is an effective method of pain management, and Dr. Vagner can recommend the best type of drug and dosage.
